Rapture Rejects is a multiplayer online battle royale indie game, developed by Galvanic Games and Explosm Games. The PC game is based on Explosm’s Cyanide & Happiness webcomic and features characters stylized in the vein of said series. In Rapture Rejects, the player is thrown into a post-apocalyptic world, where the Rapture has happened.
Along with other 49 (un?)lucky survivors, the player must fight for God’s approval and being allowed to heaven. The game features top-down perspective, customizable player avatar, several types of weapons the player can use against their fellow sinners and the sense of humor that really fits the circumstances.
The game starts with the player deciding on the appearance of their in-game avatar. The avatars’ design is lifted straight from the Cyanide & Happiness series, making them quite simplistic but with a wide range of customization opportunity.
As a battle royale game, Rapture Rejects emphasizes combat, with the added flair of typical Cyanide & Happiness wackiness. The player has a choice of several tools of destruction to use against their opponents, such as nailgun (a revolver), tromblunderbuss (shotgun), CD launcher (automatic pistol), etc. Players who want to deal with some serious AoE damage can also drop an F-Bomb, which works exactly as you’d imagine.
It’s game over, man, game over! The Almighty has decided that he had enough of our constant whining and went full biblical on our good ol’ Mother Earth. Most of the god-fearing inhabitants of the blue planet were taken to heaven before everything went bonkers. But not you, sucker! You were left behind, along with 49 other sinners. Now all you can do is grit your teeth, clench tour butt-cheeks and turn against your fellow losers. Grab whatever you can find and smack the living out of those left behind. Shoot’em, punch ’em, blow ’em up to bits. The world is your arena and to please the man upstairs you gotta get creative. Who knows, maybe if you kill them all, God will take mercy upon your soul and let you in the hereafter?
Upon its early access release, Rapture Reject received solid first reviews. Critics and players praised the video game for near-perfect translation of the Cyanide & Happiness comic style into the game world, the character customization options and the amount of craziness and absurdity spilling out off the screen. The general consensus is that the game will satisfy the dedicated fans of Explosm’s series and might be a good starting point for those who have not heard about it before.
